Wot-Nots Charity Shop

Wot-Nots is a charity shop/tea-bar selling clothes, toys, bric-a-brac, records, and books etc., which have been donated by the public.

It was opened in December 2000 and provides opportunities for voluntary work & therapeutic unpaid employment for adults who are managing a mental health problem in the community. The scheme was developed by a member of the Welwyn & Hatfield Community Support Team with support from Welwyn/Hatfield District Council and service users.

The shop is situated in a deprived area of Hatfield, and in addition to the opportunity for therapeutic unpaid employment, supports the regeneration of the area by the provision of reasonably priced goods to the local community.

Numerous problems had to be overcome to develop the project. These included, finding suitable premises, forming a partnership to develop and manage the scheme, negotiating and securing a tenancy with the Council, negotiating essential renovation by the Council to the dilapidated premises which had been unoccupied for three years, raising money from local organisations for fitting-out the premises, organising & directing the fitting-out of the shop, motivating and supporting the volunteers to assist in the redecoration of the premises & staffing the shop.
